MCL Reconstruction Surgery in Indore

MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) reconstructions is surgical procedures to repair or replace torn ligaments in the knee. These procedures are typically done to restore stability and function to the knee following significant injury.

Causes of MCL Injuries:

Indications

MCL reconstruction is considered when:

  1. Grade III Tears: Complete tears of the MCL that lead to significant instability.
  2. Chronic Instability: Persistent knee instability despite conservative treatments like physical therapy and bracing.
  3. Failed Non-Surgical Treatment: Lack of healing or improvement after an appropriate period of conservative management.
  4. Associated Injuries: Combined ligament injuries (e.g., ACL or PCL injuries) where multiple structures are damaged, necessitating a comprehensive repair.
  5. Recurrent Injuries: Repeated MCL injuries leading to instability and functional impairment.

MCL Procedure:

  • Anesthesia and Preparation:
    • General or regional anesthesia is administered.
    • The surgical area is sterilized.
  • Incision and Exposure:
    • An incision is made along the inner side of the knee to access the MCL.
    • The damaged ligament is assessed.
  • Harvesting the Graft:
    • An autograft (from the patient) or an allograft (from a donor) is prepared. Common autograft sources include the hamstring tendons (semitendinosus and gracilis).
  • Graft Placement:
    • Tunnels are drilled in the femur and tibia where the original MCL attaches.
    • The graft is threaded through these tunnels and fixed in place with screws, anchors, or other fixation devices.
  • Tensioning the Graft:
    • The graft is tensioned appropriately to restore stability while allowing natural knee movement.
  • Closing the Incisions:
    • The incisions are closed with sutures or staples.
    • Sterile dressings are applied to the wound.

Post-Operative Care:

  1. Immobilization:
    • The knee is typically immobilized in a brace for a 4 weeks.
  2. Weight-Bearing:
    • Partial to full weight-bearing initially is allowed knife.
    • Partial to full weight-bearing is allowed from the initial day one
  3. Physical Therapy:
    • Starts with gentle range of motion exercises.
    • Progresses to strengthening exercises focusing on the quadriceps, hamstrings, and surrounding muscles.
    • Functional training and proprioception exercises are included as recovery progresses.
  4. Follow-Up:
    • Regular follow-up appointments to monitor healing, remove stitches or staples, and adjust the rehabilitation plan.
    • For other surgeons who delay it for 6 weeks, we allow it sooner with our technique.
